Hadiyah and sadaqah: six differences, from the sources
Both are giving. Both are good. But Islam treats a gift (hadiyah) and sadaqah as two different things, and the difference shapes how we hand food to families in Sudan. Here are six differences, each with its source.
1. Who it is for
Sadaqah is given for the sake of God to someone in need. A gift is given to show love and honour, to anyone, rich or poor, with no need implied. The Prophet ﷺ himself asked about food brought to him: "Is it a gift or sadaqah?"
2. The Prophet's family
Sadaqah was not lawful for the Prophet ﷺ and his family; gifts always were. Many Sudanese families trace their roots to his family with love and pride. A gift never needs anyone to ask who their grandfather was.
3. A gift is answered with a gift
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to accept gifts and give something in return for them."
A gift opens a two-way bond between equals. That is why, if a family wishes, and only then, we pass on a thank-you to the giver.
Turn your sadaqah into someone's gift.
4. A gift builds love
"Give gifts to one another, you will love one another."
5. Sadaqah is best hidden; a gift is given warmly
The Qur'an praises giving sadaqah in secret (2:271). A gift is handed over openly, with a warm word, the way you give to a cousin. We keep both: the giver stays private, and the family receives in the manner of a gift, quietly, at their own door.
6. No one is asked for thanks
"We feed you only for the sake of God. We want no reward from you, nor thanks." (Qur'an 76:9)
So which is it, when you give here?
For you, the giver, what you send is a good deed with its reward. For the family, it arrives as a gift. Our model in one line: your sadaqah, their gift. We do not accept zakat for now, because zakat has its own rules on who receives it and in what form.
For the full explanation, including the hadith about sadaqah being "the impurities of people" read in its context, see Gifts, not charity.
Send a gift today
Choose what your gift becomes: dates from Sudanese farmers, eggs, grain, poultry, or wherever it is most needed. Follow it in the ledger from the wallet to the family.
Gifts to Sudan is a volunteer initiative, not a registered charity, and holds no licence. 100% of what you give buys gifts; we cover the fees on our side, and the public ledger shows them.
